ASA Health MD

Laser vein surgery: modern, minimally invasive.

Treating varicose veins, spider veins, and venous insufficiency with laser-based vascular techniques. Faster recovery, less scarring, and better cosmetic outcomes than traditional vein-stripping surgery.

A modern vascular laser treatment in progress.

The Treatment

How laser vein surgery works.

Laser vein surgery uses focused light energy delivered through a thin fiber inserted into the vein. The laser energy heats the vein wall, causing it to close. Over the following weeks, your body reabsorbs the closed vein and reroutes blood flow through healthier surrounding veins.

The procedure replaces traditional vein-stripping surgery for most patients. No large incisions, no general anesthesia, no extended downtime. Most patients walk out the same day and return to normal activity within 24–48 hours.

The Techniques

Three vascular laser approaches.

Different vein problems require different laser approaches. The vascular ultrasound at consultation determines which technique (or combination) fits your specific anatomy.

  • Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) — for larger varicose veins, including the saphenous vein. A thin laser fiber is threaded into the vein under ultrasound guidance and used to close the vein from the inside.
  • Laser Sclerotherapy — for smaller varicose veins, reticular veins, and spider veins. Surface laser energy targets the vein directly through the skin.
  • Combination approaches — many patients benefit from EVLA for the large feeding vein combined with sclerotherapy or surface laser for the smaller branches.

Candidates

Who laser vein surgery is for.

Most candidates have symptomatic varicose veins — leg heaviness, aching, swelling at the end of the day, or visible bulging veins that impact quality of life. Others have cosmetic concerns about spider veins or are diagnosed with venous insufficiency on ultrasound.

Patients with active blood clots, severe peripheral vascular disease, or certain bleeding disorders may not be candidates. We screen carefully at consultation. If you have symptoms but are unsure whether they are vein-related, a vascular ultrasound is the right starting point.

The Process

What to expect, start to finish.

A laser vein treatment is an outpatient procedure. Here is how it unfolds.

  1. 01

    Vascular assessment

Initial consultation with a focused vascular ultrasound to map your veins, identify the source of the problem, and confirm candidacy for laser treatment.

  2. 02

    Treatment planning

Dr. Lee designs the specific approach: which veins to treat, in what order, and whether multiple sessions are needed for full clearance.

  3. 03

    The procedure

30–90 minutes under local anesthesia. You are awake, comfortable, and able to talk. Most patients describe pressure rather than pain during the procedure.

  4. 04

    Compression therapy

Compression stockings worn for 1–2 weeks after treatment. Mild walking encouraged the same day; avoid heavy lifting and prolonged sitting for the first week.

  5. 05

    Follow-up ultrasound

A follow-up vascular ultrasound at 1–3 months to confirm the treated vein is fully closed and rerouting is going as planned.

Why ASA Health MD

Comprehensive vascular care.

  • Ultrasound-guided

Every laser treatment is guided by vascular ultrasound. Treating the visible vein without knowing the underlying anatomy is how recurrence happens.

  • Minimally invasive

No incisions, no general anesthesia, no overnight stay. Walk in, walk out, return to normal activity within 1–2 days.

  • Quick recovery

Most patients return to desk work the next day and full activity within a week. The recovery profile is dramatically better than traditional vein stripping.

  • Comprehensive care

Vein treatment is one part of a broader vascular workup. We address the underlying insufficiency, not just the visible symptom.
